Cybercrime Expected to Cost $6 trillion by 2021

In a recent interview with Steve Morgan, Business Word Disrupt has come up with a “Cyber-security Bible” that sums up the cyber-security landscape and horizon. Steve Morgan is Founder and Editor-In-Chief at Cyber-security Ventures based in the US and has been involved in the computer and cyber-security field since 1984.

According to Morgan, here are the top FIVE happenings in cyber-security everyone should know about:

  • The global cybercrime damages are expected to grow to $6 trillion annually by 2021, up from $3 trillion in 2015.
  • Cyber-security spending will exceed $1 trillion cumulatively over the next 5 years
  • The global cyber-security index will grow 50X over the next 5 years in congruence with the increase of cyber targets since the online population is expected to increase from 2+ billion now to 4+ billion by 2021
  • There will be 3.5 million unfilled cyber-security jobs by 2021 resulting in a severe cyber-security workforce shortage.
  • The rate of internet connection is outpacing our ability to properly secure it with an increase from 100 to 200 billion internet connected devices by 2021

When asked about the top 3 countries most disrupted by cyber threats, Morgan explained thatover the next 5 years the countries at the greatest risk will be those with the largest populations: China, India, and U.S., followed by Russia. “These nations will be connecting the largest numbers of new users to the internet, and expanding their cyber-attack surfaces proportionately.”
